Recovery Christian Center Daily Meditation - 7/11/13 - Not Every Expectation Is Unrealistic
"Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation." Psalms 100 NLT
All of us have heard the phrase unrealistic expectations and we know that having them and placing them on others and even ourselves can be detrimental to our walk with Christ and our recovery. Expecting someone to change who isn't ready or expecting a job that isn't really God's will for us or even expecting everyone to forgive us for our past and except us unconditionally can set us up for unnecessary disappointment which can send us on a downward spiral if we're not careful.
There are however some area we can have expectations, even ones that to the outside world might seem unrealistic. Those areas are our relationship with God, our spiritual growth, our relationship with self and our ongoing recovery. We can expect miracles in those area if we are committed to this new way of life. In fact it is impossible to spend time in the presence of God and not be changed. The text tells us that "we are His" and "His unfailing love continues forever". We can expect that our praise and worship and our continual investment in our relationship with Him and ourselves will change us into who He has called us to be. If we pray and stay in His presence, stay in His Word and our recovery literature there is no way we will stay the same because it's God's will for us to grow.

Response to question on secular artists thanking God
Question from Lonnie Hunter Music on Praise 103.9 this morning: WHILE WATCHING THE BET AWARDS I WAS ASKED...Y IS IT SO EXCITING WHEN ARTISTS THANK GOD? BUT (WITHOUT ANY NEED FOR JUDGEMENT) LEAD LIVES ON AND OFF STAGE THAT DONT GLORIFY HIM... HOW WOULD U ANSWER THIS?
My Response: I think we need to be careful about questioning the motives of secular artist when too many of our Gospel, Christian Contemporary, Inspirational and other Christian artists and several of my brothers and sisters of the cloth are living just as foul. The difference is we know better. When we get to the point that we can confidently say we live every scripture to the best of our ability then we can pass judgment. Until then pull the plank out of your eye before you worry about the speck in your brother's eye.

Recovery Christian Center Daily Meditation - 7/1/13 - Watching Our Mouths
"Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame thetongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison." James 3:2-8 NLT
Prior to living this new way of life we can all agree that as damaging as some of our actions were nothing was more devastating or had a more lasting impact than what came out of our mouths. Most of us cause much more harm to others and ourselves by what we said than what we did. Even now today in recovery and with a developing and growing personal relationship with God we still are susceptible to, as the old saying goes, "engaging our mouths before engaging our brains." We can still cause harm with not just how we say it but what we say. Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences." which literally means that those of us who are spiritually connected can speak death or life into the lives of the people we come in contact with. We need to ask ourselves what are we speaking? Are we speaking love, encouragement, positive affirmation and validation or are we speaking poison, judgement, negativity and rejection? Are we encouraging change and growth or are we condemning them to be nothing? When we look at how hard it was to overcome all of the negativity spoken over us and that we spoke over ourselves,the choice should be simple. It comes down to this, words have power and how we use that power can and will effect change in someones life. It's up to us what kind of change that will be.
